Furnishing hotel bedrooms

The room that decides the review. Bed sizes and the heights around them, the fitted joinery that holds everything else, and the materials and finishes that have to survive daily housekeeping for a decade — with the fire and accessibility standards that apply in the UK.

Guide 1

Hotel bed and headboard sizes

The six UK bed sizes, the bed and headboard heights that make a room work, and the fire standards for mattresses and headboards that a fire risk assessment will ask about.

  • King 1500 × 2000, super king 1800 × 2000, zip-and-link for flexible rooms
  • Mattress top 600–700 mm; 450–480 mm in accessible rooms
  • BS 7177 and BS 7176 medium hazard — Crib 5
  • Accessible bedrooms: one per twenty, 1500 mm turning space

Fitted bedroom furniture

Wardrobes, desks, luggage benches and the housings for minibars, safes and televisions: the dimensions a fitted run is built around and the standards it should be tested to.

  • Desk 720–760 mm per BS EN 527-1; chair seat ~450 mm
  • Storage to BS EN 16121; tall units wall-fixed

Materials and finishes for hotel bedrooms

Board grades, laminate against veneer against paint, the surface and abrasion tests to ask for, fire performance for upholstery, and the finishes that stand up to housekeeping chemicals.

  • BS EN 12720–12722 surface tests; Martindale 25–30k general, 40k+ severe
